Strong authentication is an alternative to the traditional Username/Password login process. The traditional Username/Password system is highly vulnerable to hackers, sharing, sniffing and other common security problems. Strong Authentication requires that the user pairs something that they have (like a keychain-sized "token", their lockbox key, PDA or cell phone), with something they know (like a pin number). When they want access, they they can use the device they have to generate a unique one-time-use password. They enter this special password, plus their pin number in order to access the MLS or other real estate system. It's easy and it's inexpensive.
Clareity Security developed the SAFEMLS® solution (SAFEACCESS™ in Canada) specifically to meet the unique needs of the real estate industry. SAFEMLS provides unique one-time-use passwords using tokens, software, and text messages to cell phones and pagers. The system supports other authenticators such as GE Security / Supra lockbox keys, smart cards, USB tokens, certificates and even biometric (e.g. fingerprint) devices, though some of these authenticators have more limited uses in the real estate industry. The SAFEMLS system is based on Secure Computing's SafeWord® PremierAccess™ - the product used by companies such as Boeing, American Express, Citibank, Sun Microsystems, and Cisco - as well as by the Department of Defense.
